Trump Claims Toyota Promised $10B Investment in US — But Automaker Says Not So Fast

President Donald Trump proclaimed on Tuesday that Toyota has pledged to invest $10 billion in the U.S., but the Japanese automaker is pumping the brakes.

Trump said at least twice on Tuesday that the automaker would be investing $10 billion to open new factories in several states after he met with “Mr. Toyota” in Japan.

“Yesterday I was with Mr. Toyota in Japan, and he just announced he is going to spend — they are going to spend $10 billion and they are going to build new car plants and they are going to build them in numerous states, about six or seven different states,” Trump said during a speech in South Korea.

But on Wednesday, Toyota said it never promised Trump anything of the sort, according to Reuters.

Hiroyuki Ueda, a Toyota executive, said no pledges were made about an investment of that caliber, but added that the automaker would continue to invest and create jobs in America.
