President Donald Trump cancelled an upcoming rally in Kansas for embattled Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), whose reelection bid has become an unlikely toss-up in the deep red state.

The White House confirmed the weekend rally was off in a statement: “President Trump will continue connecting directly with Americans nationwide through more than 20 telerallies before Election Day. These events give him the opportunity to highlight his accomplishments and expand his reach across the country.”

Trump also canceled a rally in Iowa.

CNN released new polling in the race on Thursday, finding Marshall behind his Democratic Party opponent Adam Hamilton by four points. The poll pushed the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls in Hamilton’s direction, putting up by 0.2% in the very close race.

Trump’s event would have been his second for Marshall in Kansas this campaign season. Trump rally last week included several hecklers disrupting his speech, including shouting expletives at him.

“You know, they’re paid,” the president claimed as he was interrupted at some point. “They’re paid protesters. Every once in a while, you know, you see some. And it’s actually very dangerous to be– oh here’s another one. Listen to that one. I can tell by the voice they get paid. They get paid.”

As Trump spoke, a woman yelled, “I f*cking hate you!”

Marshall raised eyebrows this week as well, defending the Trump economy at a recent campaign stop.

“Families and folks, this is one of the best economies I’ve ever seen in my lifetime,” Marshall said, adding:

Yes, gas prices are too high, but the economy itself… There are great jobs, manufacturing jobs growing all over the state, in many ways because of President Trump’s policies as well. So wages are going up. Wages are going up faster right now than inflation is. But we’re still bearing that problem of Joe Biden’s inflation, when we had 21, 22% cumulative inflation, but wages are starting to catch up. The best cattle markets of my lifetime, manufacturing jobs are good, oil and gas industry is solid, financial services are solid. Anyone’s 401(k) go up a little bit the last couple years?

So look, we have a solid economy, we just got to get the price of gas and groceries down. We’re looking at a GDP this quarter for the United States of four, maybe five percent. Two quarters last year, I don’t know why our governor doesn’t talk about this, the third quarter last year Kansas led the nation in GDP growth, 6.5%. He led the nation in the third quarter. In the second quarter, we were in the top three. So the economy is growing. We’ve got great jobs out there. You’ve got to be willing to work, though, right? You’ve gotta be willing to work. You’ve gotta be able to pass a drug test, some of those types of things. So we’ve got great jobs.
