Troy Jackson Muses Aloud He’s Not Sure Why Susan Collins is ‘Not Beating Me By More’

Maine Democratic Party candidate for U.S. Senate Troy Jackson raised some eyebrows on Friday by musing out loud that he was not sure why his opponent, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), is “not beating me by more.”

“This is a state that has voted consistently for Democratic presidents. President Trump is incredibly unpopular here. Why is this race as close as it is? Why are you not running away from this race?’ Jackson was asked at a recent campaign event.

“Well, uh, I mean, I guess, I mean, no one ever has. I mean, it’s, uh… I mean, 30 years is a long time,” Jackson replied, referring to Collins’s long run in the U.S. Senate, adding:

I mean, they’re spending an unbelievable amount of money making sure that billionaires continue to get their tax cuts. And, you know, I mean, I think, you know, I’m not as well known, certainly been trying. I’ve only had 85 days to do this. You know, I mean, I guess I’m wondering why she’s not beating me by more. But, you know, seriously, if you’re the most powerful senator, person in the world, which she claims to be, I mean, why is this logger from Allagash being competitive with you? I think that says a lot more about her record than it does about mine.

The latest RealClearPolitics average of polling the race has Jackson beating Collins by 1.4 percent in the very narrow race.
