‘That Doesn’t Work!’ MS NOW Analyst Warns Democrats ‘Missing the Mark’ With Black Voters
MS NOW legal analyst Charles Coleman Jr. warned Monday that Democrats are “missing the mark” when it comes to appealing to Black voters.
On Money, Power, Politics with Stephanie Ruhle, the host said that in Ohio, “There are 100,000 registered Black voters that have not voted in the last three elections.”
“Why do you think Democrats have not spent more time and more money reaching voters there?” she asked Coleman.
“The first implication of what was going on in Ohio and nationally came out when we saw this Ken Martin unofficial autopsy of the DNC,” Coleman said. “And what that revealed was something that many people who I know have been talking about for a very long time, which is, Democrats have a big tent but have not invested in big tent messaging.”
“That’s hard to do because a lot of people in that tent want to hear different things!” Ruhle exclaimed.
“I’m not saying it’s easy, but what I’m saying is — when I was young, if I wanted McDonald’s, my mom would say to me, ‘You got McDonald’s money?’ If you want to have a big tent, then you have to have to make the investment and really targeting certain audiences,” Coleman said, continuing:
You can’t go to a class and say, “I didn’t do your homework because I had so much homework to do in this other class,” because that teacher doesn’t care. So you can’t go to one community and say, “Well, we spent so much time focusing on the big tent or this community that we can’t necessarily speak directly to the issues that are bothering you or you’re most concerned about that doesn’t work.” And so, when we’re in this conversation, there are a lot of people who are like, “Look, what’s in it for me? What are you going to do for me?”
Black unemployment right now is higher than 7%, which is higher than than any any other group in the country. People are looking at wealth gaps in Black America that have dipped from 2022 to 2025 by 25%, you know, on average — that is something that people are very much so concerned about. And no, Republicans don’t represent the answer. But the question becomes, when you’re talking about Democrats, “How are you going to fix it? What are you going to do about it?” That’s where Democrats are missing the mark.
“They might not have the answer,” Ruhle added.
