Ted Cruz Claims Muslim Senate Candidate Will Share Classified Info With ‘Terrorists’
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) baselessly claimed that if elected, Abdul El-Sayed will share classified information with Muslim terrorists.
El-Sayed, a former public health official who is hoping to become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, will face former Rep. Mike Rogers in next month’s election, which polls indicate is a close race. Right-leaning media outlets have attempted to link El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist organization. In 2012, the Democrat’s half-sister wrote in a social media post that their mother was an activist in the group in the early 1970s. El-Sayed has said he did not “know what my mother was doing” in those days.
Appearing on Tuesday’s Hannity on Fox News, Cruz referenced El-Sayed’s recent appearance on Meet the Press, where El-Sayed denied having connections to the group.
“A week ago, El-Sayed was on Meet the Press, and he was asked about his connections and his family’s connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, and he just flat-out lied,” Cruz alleged. “He said, ‘No, I have no connections.’ And Meet the Press just said, ‘Ok,’ and accepted it.”
Cruz then floated the possibility that Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) could place El-Sayed on the Senate Intelligence Committee, in which case, the senator said, El-Sayed would engage in treason.
“I believe this man is Muslim Brotherhood,” Cruz said. “One of the most frightening things, if he were to win, senators don’t undergo a security clearance. By virtue of being elected to a constitutional office, you are deemed to have a security clearance. Chuck Schumer could place Abdul El-Sayed on the Senate Intelligence Committee. He would have access to the very highest level of classified materials. And I believe, if that were to happen, there would be an unacceptably high risk that American servicemen and women, their lives would be endangered, and that our covert intelligence assets, their lives would be in danger because every reason to believe Abdul El-Sayed would share that classified information with Muslim Brotherhood terrorists.”
