Sportswriter Mike Florio argued Monday that the Washington Commanders’ late-game meltdown that resulted in a tie should cost the head coach his job.

The Commanders took on the New York Giants on Sunday. Although Washington was in firm control of the game throughout much of the afternoon, the Giants — led by quarterback Jameis Winston — came surging back in the fourth quarter to tie the game 27-27 and force overtime.

During the extra 10-minute period, neither team was able to score on their first possessions, meaning the next score by either of them would automatically win the game. The Giants looked primed to win the game when they drove down the field and got into field goal range. That was until running back Cam Skattebo fumbled the ball to the Commanders.

On Washington’s ensuing drive, quarterback Jayden Daniels led the offense down the field and it looked as though they would be the ones to kick the game-winning field goal. With 13 seconds to go and no timeouts, however, Daniels inexplicably ran the ball and was tackled inbounds. That allowed the clock to run out, ending the game with a tie.

Reacting to the play on PFT Live, Florio made the case that such a blunder should result in Commanders coach Dan Quinn being fired.

“There were so many people who could have fixed this,” Florio said. “Now, ultimately, it lands on Dan Quinn, and I firmly believe he should be fired today because of it. I think it is a disqualifying failure.”

Florio then referenced a tweet by NBA legend Magic Johnson, who’s also a member of the Commanders’ ownership group. After the loss, Johnson said he was “in total disbelief” over the team’s “poor clock management.”

“When you’ve lost Magic, you got a problem,” Florio said. “Magic Johnson had one of his very obvious — and we love it — tweets, but he goes public. One of the owners of the team goes public with the criticism of what happened in that situation. I don’t think there’s any way out of this.”
