‘Sometimes Things Happen’ Vance Says When Asked About Reports of US Strike on Iranian Wedding

Vice President JD Vance was confronted Thursday with the recent U.S. attack on Iran that reportedly upended a wedding in the southern part of the country.

Iranian state media reported five people were killed in the attack, and 67 others were hurt “when a bomb brought down the roof” of the wedding venue, The New York Times reported.

“I know CENTCOM says it’s investigating, but have you been briefed on that attack? And is the U.S. responsible?” a reporter at Thursday’s press briefing asked Vance.

“I’ve been briefed to the extent that I know that we’re investigating,” Vance said, continuing:

I will say that the Iranian state media has not been a very good scribe about what’s happened in the conflict thus far, so I’m extremely skeptical of this.

What I can say with 100% confidence is that unlike the IRGC, the United States never targets civilians in combat. We never will do that, we never have done that.

And unfortunately, obviously, sometimes things happen, but in this particular case, I don’t think that we have any information one way or the other.

We’re investigating it, because obviously we care. We want to know. And if we do make mistakes — again, this is the big difference between us and Iran — when our military makes mistakes, they learn from them to try to get better from them. So we’re investigating it very fully.

The Times reported that “The bomb that hit the residential area was American, according to a weapons expert and a visual analysis by The Times.”

The U.S. has still not officially claimed responsibility after a guided U.S. Tomahawk missile hit a girls’ elementary school in Minab on the first day of the war, and killing at least 156 people.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said they were “still investigating,” although, “The only side that targets civilians is Iran.”

President Donald Trump told the media, “We figure it was done by Iran, because they’re very inaccurate, as you know, with their munitions. They have no accuracy whatsoever. It was done by Iran.”

Reuters reported that U.S. military investigators believed that the U.S. was, in fact, responsible for that strike.
