Senate Democrat Flat Out Says He Won’t Trust Mail-in Voting if SCOTUS Allows Trump’s Order

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) will not trust mail-in voting if the Supreme Court allows President Donald Trump’s order to go through, he told CNN’s Dana Bash Wednesday.

Blumenthal said:

I won’t personally, and I think most Americans will view mail voting as lacking credibility, because remember, the United States Postal Service is going to be screening your ballot and sending them back if it finds a single discrepancy. And you may not know that your ballot has been sent back to state election officials, they may not be able to comply in time, and there are strict deadlines for submitting mail ballots.

Blumenthal’s comments come one day after a whistleblower raised “grave concerns” that the proposed new rules could harm voters. Blumenthal’s office first shared the allegation via a report published Tuesday.

“The whistleblower’s allegations make clear that USPS lacks the technical or operational capability needed to effectively implement the EO’s provisions in a way that safeguards every citizen’s right to vote in the upcoming midterm elections,” the report reads. “Despite this, the Trump Administration appears intent on USPS moving forward with its flawed plans, no matter the chaos they may create.”

It continued:

The whistleblower’s allegations also provide disturbing information suggesting that USPS may have violated a court order by continuing to implement the EO despite being ordered to cease all such work. We urge you to abandon this ill-conceived, unconscionable plan and ensure that all Americans can exercise their constitutional right to vote, including by mail, without interference by USPS

Trump issued an executive order on mail-in voting in March.

During the signing, White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf said, “What this executive order is going to do is, one, we are going to take federal data, we are going to ensure each state’s election officials are provided with a comprehensive view of who the eligible voters in their jurisdiction actually are, allowing them to properly verify whether everyone voting in their elections is legally able, and then it orders the U.S. Postmaster General to take bold new measures to verify the ballots being sent to people who are eligible to vote and that the ballots that are being returned are being properly returned by eligible voters only.”
