Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn has resigned his post less than a week after talking about increased threats against President Donald Trump and other administration protectees on 60 Minutes.

Quinn appeared alongside Director Sean Curran Oct. 11 to tell CBS News’s Norah O’Donnell about the explosion in threats the Secret Service has investigated — 10,000 this year alone.

“I think the biggest factor we’re dealing with today is mental health issues for sure,” Quinn said,. “And more people are being pushed over the edge in either direction.”

On X, Quinn wrote Friday that his departure has been in the works for months, even though he only began his tenure 18 months ago.

“Today I informed the men and women of the @SecretService that I will be transitioning out of my role as Deputy Director,” Quinn wrote. “Director Curran and I have been working on a thoughtful transition plan for months now. Proud of the men & women of the USSS and all your accomplishments!”

Quinn told NewsNation he came out of retirement “to return to the agency at the personal request” of Curran, and was resigning in order to “spend more time with his family.”

Curran was promoted to director after he was part of the crew that saved Trump from the assassination attempt in Butler, PA. Curran’s predecessor, Kimberly Cheatle, stepped down after the security breach at the 2024 rally killed two people and wounded the president.

In a letter to employees obtained by NewsNation, Quinn said he is most proud of helping to manage the leadership transition while increasing staffing, bringing on an additional 929 law enforcement personnel this year, compared with 87 last year.

Quinn wrote, “I also told the Director last year that one of my goals was to work myself out of this job as quickly as possible.

“No timeline, just the right time, and I believe that time is now,” the letter read. “Part of that calculus is for personal reasons, but most of all it is knowing that the Secret Service is well-positioned for the future.”

Quinn’s last day was expected to be Nov. 7.
