Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and the Democratic Party leaders in the House released scathing statements on Monday after federal agents searched the Minnesota progressive’s home, following mounting pressure from President Donald Trump to indict his political enemies at home.
Rep. Omar wrote on social media in reply, “I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
“I will not be silenced,” she added.
Trump himself has repeatedly attacked Omar over the years and insisted she should “get the hell out of our country.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY–D), House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (MA–D), and chair of the House Democratic Caucus Pete Aguilar (CA–D) released a joint statement on the search.
“The Trump administration’s raid on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home is deeply disturbing and raises serious questions about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump’s adversaries,” read the statement, adding:
For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family.
The American people deserve transparency, and we will deliver full accountability for the rogue abuse of power from the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice.
Legal commentators were quick to point out the dubious nature of the search, which was reportedly looking for paperwork to prove allegations that Omar’s now-deceased father had lied on citizenship applications.
“An important bit of immigration law relevant here; Section 212(k) of the INA already creates a waiver by which immigrants who obtain status through fraud that they didn’t know about can avoid consequences like losing a green card,” commented immigration lawyer and pundit Aaron Reichlin-Melnick.
“So this is *even weaker* than it already seems,” he added.
