Republican Senator Rips His Party— Dares Cohorts to Condemn GOP Candidate for ‘Intolerance and Racism’: ‘How Great Political Parties Self-Destruct’

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) went after his own party for its silence on a social media post from a statewide GOP candidate in Texas which Cornyn denounced as an example of “intolerance and racism.”

The post that prompted Cornyn to lash out came from Bo French — who is the Republican nominee for Texas railroad commissioner. French posted an image from Saturday night’s Texas-Ohio State game which predominantly showed people of color in the stadium celebrating the Longhorns’ game-winning touchdown.

“I heard UT graduation this year looked like this,” French said of the image he posted. “I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.

Cornyn called out French’s post and dared his GOP cohorts to join him.

“This is the Republican nominee for statewide office,” Cornyn wrote on X. “Are other Republican elected officials going to condemn the intolerance and racism, or look the other way while it becomes normalized. This is how great political parties self-destruct. Sad.”

The Texas Senator has been more vocal in his criticisms of the party since losing his primary race to Ken Paxton in May. In recent weeks, Cornyn has attacked Paxton and made clear he does not plan to help him win the general election.

“Paxton’s a poor campaigner,” Cornyn told the Texas Tribune in late August. “He’s lazy and doesn’t raise money. And he basically is not offering a very compelling case for his election. He’s making this harder than it needs to be.”

Cornyn has also shown an increased willingness to challenge President Donald Trump — who backed Paxton in the primary. The outgoing senator rejected the president’s claim that he could send $5,000 checks to adult Americans without Congress signing off.

“He would need approval,” Cornyn told Mediaite’s Sarah Rumpf.
