The political world was left in shock on Wednesday over a bombshell report from The New York Times claiming that a Venezuelan billionaire received a pardon from President Donald Trump after paying $50 million to Alina Habba, Trump’s former attorney.
According to The Times report, the family of Julio Herrera Velutini, a Venezuelan-Italian businessman, hired Habba in a four-year deal that guaranteed her $10 million a year, plus bonuses. Herrera pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor campaign finance violation after he was accused of trying to bribe the governor of Puerto Rico in 2022.
Habba, an adviser at the Justice Department and senior adviser to then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, was reportedly hired to work at Concord Partners, a mysterious company set up by the Herrera family just days before Habba signed the deal. Weeks after the agreement, Herrera was pardoned.
Habba, who reportedly had an office at the DOJ at the time, denied having any role in the pardon.
The explosive report left many with their jaws on the floor, while frequent critics of the administration simply pointed to it as the latest example of corruption.
“Alina Habba was an advisor to the Attorney General, was interim US Attorney in New Jersey, and all the while was negotiating a massive bribe to get a Venezuelan billionaire a pardon,” Pod Save America co-host Tommy Vietor wrote on X.
“Does it ever end?” CNN’s S.E. Cupp wrote.
Habba has recently been at the center of another controversy tied back to the White House. According to The Times and Axios, Habba accused Trump advisor Ric Grenell of taking $5 million from her husband as a donation to the Kennedy Center, but never actually depositing the funds.
Grenell has denied any wrongdoing, and insiders have described the behind-the-scenes drama as the “ultimate MAGA blood feud.”
