Political and media pundits piled on the stunning book excerpt published in Vanity Fair this week, claiming President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner’s phone was compromised by Russia, a move that allegedly revealed secret bank accounts and $700 million in foreign transactions.
Kushner, 45, vehemently denied the claims raised in former Intercept reporter Matthew Cole’s upcoming book, Princes and Thieves: Jared Kushner and Mohamed bin Zayed’s Secret Plot to Remake the Middle East, calling them “outrageous and categorically false” and “completely insane.”
One outlet, The Jerusalem Post, removed its report on the story Friday morning, claiming it found “significant factual questions” about the allegations, prompting Kushner’s lawyer Chad Mizelle to make his own post: “We welcome independent scrutiny of the facts and encourage every publisher repeating these claims to demand the same documentation.”
Several journalists and politicians described the allegations in shocked terms, including Wired writer Noah Schachtman, who called them “bananas,” and Axios’ Barak Ravid said the “extremely questionable” claims “don’t add up.”
Other reactions appeared to fall along party lines, with liberals apparently salivating over the idea of Kushner being forced to reveal his bank records in court, and White House Communications Director Steven Cheung ripping the story as “bullsh*t” and “TOTAL FAKE NEWS.”
