Grieving father Patrick Clancy talks to his three dead children “all the time,” he told 60 Minutes.
Correspondent Ross Douthat scored an exclusive sit down interview with Clancy, his first since a mistrial was declared in his ex-wife’s murder trial. The episode is scheduled to air on Sunday.
CBS Mornings aired a brief clip of the interview Thursday, where Clancy said he turns to his children for support.
CLANCY: I talk to them.
DOUTHAT: What do you say?
CLANCY: Help me. All the time.
Clancy testified for the prosecution in the trial of his ex-wife Lindsay Clancy, who admitted to killing their three children — five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan — in January 2023, when she strangled them with an exercise band.
The defense argued that the former labor and delivery nurse suffered from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings, and was not criminally liable for killing her children. Prosecutors said she meticulously planned the killings ahead of time.
The judge declared a mistrial after a lone juror failed to absolve her of criminal responsibility for their deaths by strangulation.
Lindsay Clancy remains at the psychiatric facility in Massachusetts, where she’s been held for the last three years. A retrial is expected, although prosecutors have yet to announce their intentions.
This is the second big exclusive 60 Minutes has scored for its new season under editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. For last week’s season premiere, correspondent Norah O’Donnell interviewed one of the airmen shot down over Iran, who managed to survive a broken back and other serious injuries before being dramatically rescued.
Despite that emotional interview, preliminary ratings for the premiere were dismal.
Nielsen data recorded an estimated 7.9 million viewers, making it the least-watched 60 Minutes premiere since at least 2000. The audience was down 21% from last year’s premiere, while viewership among adults aged 25 to 54 sank 33%.
