‘Oh My God!’ CNN Data Guru Breaks Down Trump’s ‘Stunning’ Collapse Into ‘Deep Depths of Hell’ With Independents
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten took a closer look Wednesday at President Donald Trump’s “stunning” lack of support among independent voters.
Independents, Enten noted, were key to Trump’s win over former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Heading into a very contentious midterm election period, that support has completely disappeared.
Trump won independents over Harris by a margin of 15 points. At the time of writing, however, his net approval with that group dropped to a staggering -71 points.
“I mean, these are the deep depths of the ocean,” Enten told CNN anchor John Berman. “You never see numbers like these. This is, Johnny B– What is this? This is an 86-point shift away from the President of the United States with the group that ultimately really does determine elections. As pure independents go, usually so goes the nation; and right now, Donald Trump is at depths that truly you rarely ever see.”
Somehow, it got worse for Trump. On the issue of the economy specifically, the president went from +22 among independents to -77 — a 99-point swing.
One of the primary factors in this extreme shift, Enten continued, was gas. Trump’s war in Iran has seen energy prices skyrocket, largely due to Iranian forces disrupting the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. In Yemen, Houthi rebels have begun doing the same in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
According to data pulled from an average of polls, 98% independents disapproved of Trump’s handling of gas prices.
Enten added:
What is driving these numbers to the deep depths of hell, as far as you were concerned if you’re a Republican, you’re running for reelection this fall? It’s gas prices. It’s gas prices. Look at this: pure independents on gas prices and Trump. Just 8% — just 8% — approve. Look at this: 92% — 92% — of pure independents disapprove of Donald Trump on gas prices.
We have seen this disapproval rating hitting record levels with the electorate overall. We’ve seen the gas prices go up, and you’ve literally seen the odds that Republicans are able to hold on to control in the United States Senate decline. As those gas prices have gone one way, those chances for Republicans holding on to the United States Senate have gone the other way, and it’s pure independence that are driving this. Ninety-two percent. Near uniformity.
