Newsmax Host Flat-Out Asks House Republican If Trump’s $5,000 Check Is ‘Basically a Bribe’
Newsmax anchor E.D. Hill flat-out asked Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) on Thursday morning’s National Report whether or not President Donald Trump’s plan to give every American a $5000 check amounts to “basically a bribe” to voters ahead of the midterms.
“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump Dividend,” Trump declared during his lengthy speech at the GOP’s midterm convention on Wednesday night.
Trump’s pledge is the latest in a long line of promised handouts to Americans, in a “$5,000 DOGE dividend” and a “$2,000 tariff dividend,” which never happened.
“The dubious promise would likely cost more than $1 trillion and require congressional approval, and would further exacerbate the country’s nearly $1.8 trillion annual budget deficit and concerns about inflation,” noted the AP about Trump’s shock promise.
“So the president’s plan about this $5,000 payment to every adult American, is that basically a bribe?” Hill asked Clyde during their interview.
“Well, it’s an interesting plan. I just first heard of it last night. You know, I’m a numbers guy, so we’ll have to go through the numbers on that and see where we are,” Clyde replied, notably not shooting down the question’s framing.
“I’m more in favor of tax cuts, like what we did in the One Big Beautiful Bill, where we did over one point five trillion dollars of tax cuts and spending cuts as well, to get us back onto a track of fiscal sanity — kind of like what we do here in Georgia, where we have a balanced budget amendment. We need that at the federal level as well,” Clyde concluded.
“Yes, a lot of other states envy that. I like it a lot, definitely,” Hill replied.
