NEW: Trump DOJ Issues Fresh Subpoena In James Comey Investigation

The Department of Justice under Attorney General Todd Blanche has issued a fresh subpoena in the investigation into former FBI Director James Comey.

Fox News Digital reported Monday, “A federal grand jury issued a subpoena to former FBI Director James Comey’s longtime friend and advisor on Monday as part of a new investigation into Comey allegedly leaking classified information to the media.”

Daniel Richman is a Columbia University law professor who also served with Comey in the Southern District of New York and at the FBI. Richman confirmed in 2017 that he leaked contents of one of Comey’s memos to The New York Times.

“The subpoena targets…Richman and indicates that the Justice Department has launched a fresh investigation into the leak of classified information to The New York Times. The issue was also investigated under President Donald Trump’s first term, but was cut off when former President Joe Biden entered office,” Fox News Digital reported.

Speaking before the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2017, Comey said he shared details of his meetings with Trump with his friend because he wanted to get a record of the encounters “out into the public square.” Comey said he asked Richman to share the content of his memo with a New York Times reporter.

“Didn’t do it myself, for a variety of reasons,” Comey said at the time. “But I asked him to because I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel. And so I asked a close friend of mine to do it.”

Fox News Digital added that the new investigation “is in addition to the one centered on Comey’s alleged threats against Trump.”

Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury for posting a photo of seashells arranged to read, “86 47.” Trump has claimed that “86” is a “mob term” for committing murder, and that it constituted a threat to his life. Restaurant workers, however, say the number is used to indicate an order has been canceled.

Comey is seeking to have the two felony counts against him dropped before the trial is scheduled to begin in October.
