Mitch McConnell Staffers Tell Lawmakers He’ll Be Back on Capitol Hill by Wednesday: Report

After failing to appear on Capitol Hill on Monday, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will reportedly make his long-awaited return by Wednesday.

McConnell has been out of his office since his hospitalization in June. Outside of multiple photos and prepared statements, the Kentucky senator has not been seen in public throughout the entire summer. This has led to wild speculation about his health, with many insisting McConnell’s condition was more grave than his staff was reporting.

Whatever the case may be, McConnell was expected to return to his office by 3 p.m. Wednesday. By 3:30, however, he was nowhere to be found.

According to Politico, staffers have told members of Congress that McConnell will at least be back by Wednesday. That’s when he’ll have to cast a vote on a major agricultural bill.

The senator’s staff has told senior Republicans that he will be back at the Capitol in time for a Wednesday committee vote on the farm bill, which stalled earlier this summer amid his absence, according to three other people with direct knowledge of the matter who were also granted anonymity.

His vote is needed to get the GOP-written farm bill out of the Agriculture Committee after Chair John Boozman told POLITICO that he is intending to have another vote this week.

Calls for McConnell to show any proof of life have grown increasingly urgent. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, for example, has repeatedly urged McConnell to call him and assure him that he’s still fit to serve in the Senate. When that call never came, Beshear gave him an ultimatum: speak up or resign.
