MapQuest Tops App Chart After Refusing to Go Along With Trump’s ‘Lake America’ Change

MapQuest topped Apple’s top free app chart this week after declining to update their system to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.”

As of Wednesday morning, MapQuest is leading on Apple’s app chart, followed by ChatGPT. The company did not follow in the footsteps of Google Maps and Apple Maps, both of which went along with President Donald Trump’s name change.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum revealed that Trump contacted Apple directly to get the name change reflected in their maps system.

MapQuest also made it to number 8 on Google Play’s free app list.

Doug Berger, the general manager of MapQuest, said this week in a press release that the company took the same approach they did when Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America.”

“We took the same approach we did with the Gulf of Mexico: be part of the conversation, and give people an app that keeps the names they’re familiar with,” Berger said. “Hundreds of thousands of people signaled to us this weekend that we got it right, by downloading our app.”

MapQuest offered a “name generator” for fans after Trump’s executive order, t0 throw out their own Lake Ontario names.

Trump announced the “Lake America” name change amid a tense trade war with Canada. The president has proposed new tariffs against Canada after trade talks collapsed, and Canada has promised to hit the U.S. with tariffs right back, “dollar for dollar.”

Polling has suggested most Americans are not thrilled with Trump’s Lake Ontario declaration. A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed 14% of Americans back the name change, while 63% oppose it. Another 23% did not give an opinion.

That same survey found 57% also disapprove of Trump’s Canada tariffs, while 20% backed the plan.

“Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade, very sadly,” Trump said after he signed the name change order. “Even the military, you know, we defend Canada for nothing. We don’t get anything.”
