‘Make a Deal!’ Trump Says He Told Zelensky To ‘Settle With Putin’ To Stop The Killing

President Donald Trump told reporters Saturday that he told Volodymyr Zelensky at the United Nations General Assembly that he has to “make a deal” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump spoke to reporters in a gaggle as he departed the White House for Tennessee, where he attended the Tennessee Volunteers’ game against the Texas Longhorns.

“I spoke to him a lot,” Trump said of Zelensky. “And he’s going along if Putin’s going along. And some day, hopefully, in the not too distant future, maybe before the heavy winter, they’ll make a deal.”

A reporter asked Trump if he’d work with Zelensky on his request for Patriot missiles.

“I agreed with Zelensky that — we talked about a lot of different subjects. Many of those subjects, very strong agreement,” Trump said.

“But you know what I want him to do? Make a deal,” Trump continued. “I want him to settle with Putin, and I want Putin to settle with him. Last month 25,000 people died in the Ukraine-Russia war, okay? Twenty-five thousand. The month before that, 32,000 people died. They’re mostly soldiers, 97% soldiers. But whether they’re soldiers or civilians, think of it — 32,000. Two months ago, 33,000 people. This month, 25,000 people died. What a shame.”

Zelensky posted to X on Friday that Trump has given his final okay for Ukraine to build Patriot missiles meant to shoot down incoming Russian attacks. Zelensky also reportedly repeated his request for powerful Tomahawk missiles that could reach Moscow, with Trump replying, “We will work on it.”

Although Ukraine has been granted the Patriot licenses, the manufacturing process could take years. In the meantime, Zelensky wrote that peace talks will continue.

“President Trump and I had a meeting where we discussed general matters. After that, our negotiating teams held a separate, long meeting. The agreement is as follows: we will brief the European side and discuss these details with them; the Americans will speak with the Russians; and in ten days, we will come back with views and results in some shape or form,” Zelensky wrote.

“As for a trilateral Ukraine-U.S.-Russia meeting, the American side proposed preparing it and meeting at the technical level. We are waiting for the United States to propose a date,” Zelensky wrote. “The United States proposed the United Arab Emirates as the venue for such a meeting.”
