Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as U.S. ambassador to Greece on Tuesday an hour after it was publicly announced President Donald Trump was asking her to step down following damaging allegations about her conduct in office.
Moments earlier, during her debut press briefing, White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced the move, saying Trump had requested Guilfoyle’s resignation.
The departure came one day after Trump publicly signaled that Guilfoyle’s position was in jeopardy and that he was “not happy” with the ambassador, a former Fox News host and ex-fiancée of Donald Trump Jr.
Guilfoyle acknowledged she was stepping down in a lengthy statement posted to X, thanking Trump and defending her record.
“Serving as the United States Ambassador to Greece has been the honor of a lifetime,” she wrote. “From my first day as Ambassador, I have worked tirelessly to advance President Trump’s America First agenda, strengthen our strategic alliance with Greece, and deliver meaningful victories for the American people.”
Her exit follows a string of reports led by The Wall Street Journal, including allegations that Guilfoyle asked longtime Trump donor Eric Deters to wire $100,000 directly to her American Express account shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing. Guilfoyle disputed the authenticity of the messages cited in the reporting.
The Journal also reported that Guilfoyle offered Deters access to senior administration officials and later promoted a Greek construction company whose lobbyist served as one of her advisers. Further reports alleged that she boasted about wealthy Greek businessmen funding luxury travel. Her representatives also rejected those claims.
In her resignation statement Guilfoyle vowed Tuesday doubled down on those denials: “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity. I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional. I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service.”
