The family of Renee Good moved to sue the Trump administration on Thursday over her fatal shooting by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis, opening one of the first major civil challenges to the president’s deportation crackdown in Minnesota.
Good was shot dead inside her car on January 7 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross as she and her wife joined protests against the deployment of federal immigration officers to the city during Operation Metro Surge.
Two lawsuits filed Thursday accuse administration officials of negligence and violating the civil rights of Good and others under the mass immigration enforcement campaign ordered by President Donald Trump last winter. The family is seeking damages and a jury trial.
Good’s death became a flashpoint in the backlash against the operation, which sent thousands of federal agents onto the streets of Minnesota before Trump ended the surge in February.
Video of the shooting showed an agent approaching Good’s vehicle as it partially blocked a roadway. Good can be heard telling him: “That’s fine, dude, I’m not mad at you.” Another agent then ordered her to get out of the vehicle. Good briefly reversed before moving forward and driving away. The agent standing near the front of the car opened fire, striking Good three times.
Trump administration officials initially accused Good of “domestic terrorism” and claiming she sought to weaponize her vehicle, while arguing the agent acted in self-defense.
