Joe Scarborough Goes to Bat for Hakeem Jeffries Amid Fury From the Left Over Secret Meeting With Jared Kushner: ‘You Talk to Everybody’

Joe Scarborough defended House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) after a reported secret meeting with Jared Kushner amid outrage from progressives.

During a segment on Morning Joe in which the panel welcomed New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman — who broke the story of the previously unreported meeting between Jeffries and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law — Scarborough revealed he personally has had conversations with Kushner. The MS NOW host mentioned he’d spoken with Kushner about the Jeffries meeting.

“I also talk to Jared Kushner from time-to-time,” Scarborough said. “The thing I’ve found with Jared Kushner is he is — even though he’s not officially in the White House — he just goes out and talks to people. You know, even about this story, he joked with me. He said, ‘Last week I talked to Hamas, and this week people are far more outraged that I talked to Hakeem Jeffries.’ But he is one of those people that has gone around and talked a lot.”

Haberman noted, “the idea that people talking to each other is something that is going to spark outrage is a sign of where we are. I do think the blowback was pretty expansive for Hakeem Jeffries that I saw. And we’ll see if that continues when Congress is back.”

Indeed, notable progressives on social media have been furious over the news — with some even calling for Jeffries’s job.

But Scarborough went on to back the Democratic leader.

“You talk to everybody,” Scarborough said. “I mean, that’s your job … Talk to people … my opinion here: You get out, if you’re Hakeem Jeffries, you talk. Is there a deal on immigration, for instance, that could lessen suffering over the next two years? It’s what your job is as a leader.”
