GOP Senator Calls Out Trump’s Crypto Profits on MS NOW: He’s Making $1B at the Same time That ‘People Are Growing Up in a Trailer Park’
Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), who is on a media tour promoting his new book, swung by MS NOW on Tuesday morning and pulled no punches, accusing President Donald Trump and his eldest son of wanton corruption in an interview with Stephanie Ruhle.
“Do you think we have ever seen this level of corruption, with the billions of dollars the president and his family are making? I mean, right now, the largest holder of the Trump meme coin, which has no intrinsic value, has $104 million worth of it, and the president is hosting a dinner for the largest holders of that coin,” Ruhle asked.
“Look, there’s a difference. At Price Waterhouse, one thing they taught us early as a manager and a partner is that you figure out where the line is, and you take a step back. You don’t navigate the gray, and it does appear to me that some folks are navigating the gray,” Tillis replied, adding:
Whether or not it’s illegal remains to be seen. It will probably be the subject of an investigation next year if the House flips, appropriately so. I have a real — so you have that piece.
Hopefully the president has good advisors. They haven’t run afoul of the law, but appearances are not good. Anytime a president makes a billion dollars in the same year that people are growing up in a trailer park–
Ruhle added, “Way more than a billion.”
“That I grew up in, you know, it’s a bad look, and I think that’s one of the reasons why we have political headwinds. The big issue I have is with Don Jr. Look, I realize even people worth $300 or $400 million can have liquidity problems, but you’d have thought he’d have figured out another way other than letting a Russian oligarch, who has literally been on a mission with Vladimir Putin to Beijing, fund a wedding. Doesn’t make sense,” Tillis finished, adding:
Again, is it illegal? I don’t know, but appearances, it’s the last thing we need. This is about the Republican brand.
Ruhle followed up, “But here’s where it does make sense, OK? It makes sense because it makes us ask the question: Is this White House for sale? Why would a Russian oligarch want to pay for Don Jr.’s wedding unless he was getting serious political favors?”
Tillis agreed, “I think those are legitimate questions. They should be answered. My point in writing the book, and my point in talking on these shows, is that I care about the Republican brand.”
“I care about conservatism. I believe this country, and I know that my state, because we’ve empirically measured it over the last 20 years, is in better hands when Republicans are in charge. Right now, we are creating unforced errors, and we’re creating an environment 28 days from now that could take us out of power in at least one chamber,” Tillis continued, adding:
Not to mention some of the states that may be at risk for legislatures. So it’s like, gosh, let’s just admit these are legitimate questions and move on. Stop the nothing-to-see-here stuff, and just say, “Yes, we’ll look at it, and if they’ve got a good case, then present it,” and say all of this was above board.
People may not like the look, but there was nothing illegal. I’ve got no problem with that. What I’ve got a problem with right now is a trend leading up to Election Day, and I’m doing my best to make sure that Republicans, soft Republicans, and right-of-center unaffiliateds get out and vote.
Because they have no earthly idea what the consequences will be if we lose Congress. This is a Congress that was led by Democrats that voted to nuke the filibuster under Biden’s pressure. I have stood against President Trump’s trying to nuke the filibuster.
I’m worried about whether or not my Democratic colleagues are going to double down and destroy the institution of the Senate if they get in control, and that’s what I’m trying to communicate to the voters who are going to be out in 28 days.
