Fox News Anchor Throws Down With House Democrat Over Trump’s Stimulus Check Promise: ‘Still The Same Money!’
Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum threw down with Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) in a contentious interview over President Donald Trump’s $5,000 check promise if the Republicans keep control of Congress after the midterms.
“This is a bribe, basically,” Crowe said. “Donald Trump tied this to the election and it’s not okay for any president to do this. I don’t care if a Democrat would do it or a Republican would do it. It doesn’t matter, it’s wrong for any sitting president to tie a payout with U.S. taxpayer money to an election result. If a Democrat was saying that, you all would be losing your minds. It’s just not okay.”
“Let me ask you about that, because I think about that,” MacCallum said. “I think about some of these programs we hear about. I think about Mayor [Zohran] Mamdani with his free buses and free preschool in New York, free child care in New York. I mean, it’s all, isn’t that a form of giving people money back?”
CROW: Martha, you shouldn’t compare the use of taxpayer dollars for public services like public transportation and public education other than like literally writing a check to people tied to an election result.
MACCALLUM: Why not? It’s all money! It’s all money that the taxpayer —
CROW: No, it’s wrong!
MACCALLUM: Oh, why is it wrong for the government to take my money in taxes and spend it the way they want —
CROW: Let me finish!
MACCALLUM: — rather than send me a check?
CROW: If a Democrat got up there and said the same thing that, “I’m going to give a $5,000 check to every adult American if you vote for me and if we win the election, you would be losing your minds, so at least be consistent. At least be consistent here.
MACCALLUM: I am being consistent here! How is it any different from taking my tax dollars and raising benefits and raising up government programs? You’re still taking my money away from me and distributing it to other people how the government sees fit rather than saying, “Here’s a check, you spend it on your family the way you see fit.”
CROW: Martha, you’re a very smart person and you’re trying to tell me that you can’t see the difference between a president saying, “I’m gonna give $5,000 to every adult American if I win the midterm elections,” versus tax credits, versus public services, education, transportation — you can’t tell the difference?
MacCallum spoke over Crow leading him to quip, “Talking over me is not going to make your point any less valid.”
She ended the interview saying “it’s still the same money.”
“Yeah, but a bribe is a bribe,” Crow managed.
An obviously agitated MacCallum shot back, “Yeah, you can look at it that way.”
