Fox Anchor Directly Asks If Trump is a ‘Drag’ on the Republican Party

Fox News anchor John Roberts spoke to Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) on Thursday about the headwinds the GOP is facing in the midterm elections next month, and noted that President Donald Trump has hit a “historic low” in recent polling.

Roberts began, “The biggest vulnerability for the Republican Party at the moment would seem to be gas prices and the high price of literally everything else. Let’s put this up here. A poll of people saying the cost of living, 59 percent, far and away their biggest issue.”

“And then when you take a look at the president’s approval ratings, even among Republicans, he is at a historic low for the second term, just now with the support of 76 percent of Republicans compared to 92 percent about a year and a half ago. Do you think that that potentially could be a drag on the party, all of that taken together?” asked Roberts.

“Well, John, let’s just take a look at those two issues independently. Number one, it was Democrats who voted against giving rural hospitals $50 billion. It was Democrats who voted to raise taxes on senior citizens on Social Security, on people working overtime, and on young professionals making and earning tips,” Scott replied, adding:

It was the Republicans who supported lowering those taxes, putting 300 bucks a month in the pockets of everyday Americans. The president’s legacy is on the midterm ballot. He said it himself: “Vote as if I were on the ballot,” because he is, through his agenda, his legacy, and, more importantly, let’s save the America that we love. The Democrats want a very different America. I want to make sure that America continues to be the land of fairness and freedom so the next generation of young people can grow up like I did, maybe in poverty, maybe in a single-parent household, but all things are possible in the greatest country on God’s green earth.

Roberts ended it there, “Well, you certainly have proven that, Senator, no question about it. Good to catch up.”
