Economic Expert Says Trump’s ‘Own Voters’ Are ‘Starting to Feel the Pain’ of Affordability Crisis

President Donald Trump’s “own voters” are “starting to feel the pain” of the affordability crisis, Director of Economic Policy Henrietta Treyz told CNN’s Boris Sanchez Friday.

“It’s amazing. It’s really some of Trump’s own voters who are starting to feel the pain the worst,” Trezy said. “It is across low income voters. It is across folks who need to pay now 40% more just to fill up their truck or their car to go to work, $2 across various states, more expensive diesel, which is how we get all of our food, your Amazon packages, whatever it may be.”

She continued, “So the economic malaise that is expressed in the University of Michigan index and others is really starting to hit with Trump’s own voters. A lot of that is compounding from the tariffs. Obviously, the war with Iran. And it just keeps coming. So the administration’s going to have to cherry pick its data if they want to sell good news in South Carolina, or in Texas, where the president is going next week.”

Treyz’s comments come after Vice President JD Vance delivered a speech touting economic gains in the United States.

In August, the University of Michigan’s Index of Consumer Sentiment dropped to 51 from 55.2 in July. Per Yahoo! Finance, many marketers expected the number to stay near 55.

“Although the early-month weakening in sentiment was pervasive across various demographic groups, notably large reductions were seen among older consumers, lower-income consumers, and those without a college degree,” explained the survey director Joanne Hsu. “These groups are all particularly vulnerable to any erosion of purchasing power stemming from inflation.”
