‘Did Your Politics Truly Change?’ Charlamagne Presses Abdul El-Sayed on Hasan Piker Association, Flip-Flops

Michigan Senatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed dodged a question from Charlamagne Tha God on Monday morning’s episode of The Breakfast Club — and the answer he gave instead didn’t offer much of an answer at all.

Charlamagne asked El-Sayed if campaigning statewide shifted any of his political stances at all.

I think part of it is you’re always being asked about a clip about yourself, and what I want to do, they say in politics when you’re explaining, you’re losing,” he answered. “That’s because most politicians are bad at explaining.”

El-Sayed continued:

You know what Bill Clinton used to say? Whatever you think about his politics, and I got issues with some of his political positions, he was a very talented explainer. You know what he used to say? Explanation is eloquence. So if you can explain something, right, then you can empower somebody with an understanding of how the system works. That knowledge is power.

He also said he’s hoping to “get some nuance about these conversations.”

What does Medicare for all mean? It’s a public guarantee of healthcare,” El-Sayed continued. “When we talk about money out of politics, what does that actually mean? I want you to be asking that question. I want to be having that conversation with you.”

El-Sayed also referenced criticism he received after deleting old posts in which he criticized the use of fireworks while celebrating the Fourth of July.

They’re coming at me on fireworks. I’m like, all right, first, if your whole conception of America is that it’s fireworks, I’m so sorry you don’t have a complete conception of America,” El-Sayed told Charlamagne. “But even then, right, like what is it I said? Well, every time we do a fireworks show, it destroys the air quality, and people have asthma exacerbations and heart attacks the next day.”
