President Donald Trump set critics off on Thursday following the announcement of an “exclusive” dinner between the president and the biggest buyers of his meme coin.
Trump is set to host the “most exclusive dinner in the world” for 185 people who spend the most on his meme coin, The Washington Sun’s Jeff Stein first reported.
The event’s announcement includes an AI-generated illustration of Trump while he’s seated at a dinner table and pointing to something out of frame.
“Buying $1M (or less!) worth of $TRUMP coin should get you in Nov 22 Trump has pocketed $635 million,” Stein reported. “Investors down +$4 billion on Trump crypto.”
Trump’s meme coin, which is called $TRUMP, has seen a significant dip in value. CNN’s Dana Bash previously highlighted more than 700,000 people losing money on the meme coin after the plummet in value in July.
Critics lashed out at Trump, accusing him of blatantly selling access to the White House and profiting off of his office.
“This is the most brazenly corrupt sh*t I have ever seen in politics and its not even close,” Pod Save America co-host Tommy Vietor wrote on X.
Others dropped similar accusations, while some mocked Trump’s slimmed-down image in the invite.
“Look, whatever the ethics concerns may be, you ca’t deny Trump looks thin and really good here. Happy for him,” Atlantic writer Jonathan Chait wrote.
Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur noted Trump’s falling approval numbers, something he dismissed as fake news in a new TIME interview, in his criticism.
“Bad news for Trump is that his disapproval is up to 69%. That’s massive. 7 out of 10 Americans can’t stand him. The good news is he’s holding the ‘most EXCLUSIVE DINNER IN THE WORLD’ for top 185 purchasers of his meme crypto. So, as we all suffer, he’ll be making even more money!” he wrote on X.
Trump faced similar backlash after an high-dollar investor dinner at Trump National Golf Club in Washington last year. According to a report from The New York Times, some investors, including foreign ones, were open about their intention to influence the president at the event.
