CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale has called out what he deemed President Donald Trump’s “most politically damaging category of lie.”

The president’s refusal to acknowledge inflation and the increase on prices across the board, including gas and grocery prices, is challenging even his most loyal supporters, Dale wrote on X:

My personal opinion is that Trump’s lying about prices – that they’re way down from when he took office, that almost everything is cheaper now, that they’re falling rapidly right now – is his single most politically damaging category of lie.

His lies about many subjects require some level of research/prior knowledge/political engagement to debunk. When he lies about prices, even devoted supporters are passively debunking him with their own eyes every day.

Dale wrote in response to another post from Trip Gabriel, a reporter for The New York Times who profiled conservatives who appear to be turning their backs on the president.

The Trump administration has continued to insist prices are not an issue.

Earlier this month, Trump declared higher gas prices were “an inexpensive price to pay.”

And Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins dismissed soaring prices at the grocery store during an appearance this week on MAGA influencer Benny Johnson’s podcast.

“Nobody likes these expensive steaks,” Johnson told Rollins during the interview. “It’s like, the gas price, the steak price — no good. What are we doing about that?”

“For the first time, I think, in six months, that’s not what [Trump] called me about,” Rollins claimed.

“Beef is lower by five percent… Beef went up almost 30 percent under [former President] Joe Biden. Of course, the Democrats, the leftist agenda to destroy our cattle herds, take them off of our grazing lands, basically say they’re responsible for climate change.”

Rollins’ solution for Americans who are trying to pinch their pennies was to “eat chicken, pork, salmon, eggs.”
