Charlie Kirk’s Family Files Claim Alleging Security Failures by Campus Cops Before His Assassination

The family of Charlie Kirk has filed a notice of claim against the state of Utah and Utah Valley University, alleging several security failures before the conservative influencer was assassinated on the campus last year.

The claim, filed Sept. 9, made several startling allegations about security at the university that led to Kirk’s Sept. 10, 2025 death, Fox News reported.

Fox News reporter Claudia Cowan called the filing “a precursor to a lawsuit.”

Among the allegations in the notice was a failure to secure rooftops on the day of the shooting.

“The risk of a rooftop shooter should have been especially top-of-mind given the attempted assassination of President [Donald] Trump, Charlie Kirk’s close friend and political ally, by a rooftop shooter the previous year,” the claim read.

The notice also mentioned that just six campus police officers were assigned to cover the Kirk event, despite it drawing more than 3,000 people.

“On information and belief, [UVU Campus Police] Chief Jeffrey Long requested approval from then-UVU President, Astrid Tuminez, to allocate more than the six officers — which represented only 25% of the UVU police force — but his request was denied,” the claim alleged.

The claim added: “The UVU Parties’ planning was so deficient that when Mr. Kirk was shot first responders were not available and Mr. Kirk was transported to Timpanogos Regional Hospital in a private vehicle, not an ambulance.”

The document was signed by Loren Washburn, Brett Parkinson, and Clifford Parkinson, attorneys for the Kirk family. It was filed the day before the first anniversary of the Turning Point USA founder’s death.

Kirk was shot in the neck as he spoke to students on the university campus. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Kirk’s wife, Erika Kirk, has since taken over as CEO of Turning Point USA.

His alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, turned himself in on the day after Kirk’s death. He is due back in court on Oct. 23.
