‘Multiple’ Victims Reported In Elementary School Shooting, Children Included
Police responded to reports of a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon, CNN reported.
The network’s Leigh Waldman explained that authorities had confirmed an active shooter situation at the elementary school and established a reunification center nearby for parents and families.
“We’ve been calling businesses in the area, calling officials in the area, hoping to get any kind of information,” Waldman said. “But all we’re hearing at this point is that this is an extremely active situation that’s all unfolding at an elementary school surrounded by neighborhoods and businesses there in Bend, Oregon.”
At around 5:20 p.m. ET, CNN aired the presser, held by the communications manager of the Bend Police Department, Sheila Miller, who explained, “At about 12:59 p.m., dispatch received the first call reporting a shot fired into a car.”
She continued:
Our officers were on scene at approximately 1:02 p.m. Seconds later, we received word over the radio that the suspect in this incident was down. We received multiple 911 calls during this incident, just in those two minutes, reporting an active shooter in Silver Rail Elementary School. At 1:02, as I said, our officers were on the scene. Moments later, the shooter had been shot and killed. We do not know; we do not have confirmation yet of who shot the suspect. It may have been a bystander.
“At this time, we have multiple victims,” the communications manager confirmed, adding that the victims include children, that two individuals were transported to the hospital, and that their status is unknown. She also confirmed that the only suspect in the shooting, who is now dead, was inside the school.
And per CNN’s chief law enforcement analyst, John Miller, the shooter was a “16-year-old young man.”
“We don’t know what his relationship is to the school,” Miller continued. “We do know he was shot and killed by an adult who was on the scene, apparently before police got there.”
A press conference held by law enforcement on Thursday night confirmed that three children were killed, ages 5, 8, and 11. A teacher was also killed, while a 7-year-old and another teacher were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
