Apple Maps Caves to Trump on Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America

Apple Maps is officially rolling out changes to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported Tuesday.

“Apple Maps is renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. Change is rolling out now,” he wrote on X. “US: Lake America Canada: Lake Ontario International: Both names.”

Google previously made the same name change.

“The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for ‘Lake Ontario’ to ‘Lake America’ in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names,” Google explained in a statement.

“These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.”

MapQuest declined to outright change the name on its platform, and instead built a name generator.

“We’re not changing the name of Lake Ontario. Name it whatever you want at your leisure: https://gulfof.mapquest.com/lakeontario,” the company wrote on X before encouraging people to “tag us so we can see your work.”

That decision has proven unpopular with most Americans, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed Tuesday. The poll revealed just 14% of Americans support the change.

The president’s new tariffs against Canada are also unpopular. The same poll found 57% of those who responded are against tariffs entirely, and only 20% support the decision.
