‘America Has Returned’: NASA Unveils Trump-Signed Plaque That Will Go on Next Moon Mission
NASA unveiled a plaque signed by President Donald Trump that will be placed on the moon when the next astronauts are expected to land in 2028.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman read the plaque aloud at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Friday, where the president awarded “Congressional Space Medals of Honor” to the Artemis II moonshot crew.
“America has returned,” Isaacman began. “Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and with the hopes and dreams of all mankind, here marks the beginnings of humanity’s first outpost on another world. Signed, President Donald Trump, president of the United States of America.”
Artemis IV is scheduled to deliver humans back to the moon’s surface for the first time in over 54 years. According to NASA, “Artemis IV astronauts will travel to lunar orbit, where two crew members will descend to the surface and spend approximately a week near the South Pole of the Moon conducting new science before returning to lunar orbit to join their crew for the journey back to Earth.”
During his visit to the space center, Trump announced the formation of a new U.S. Space Academy that he said will rival West Point and Annapolis in attracting the best students in the country.
“It’s clear that we will need to educate and train an entire generation of skilled service members, engineers, and civil operators, and everything else to do what we have to do, and what we’re right now doing the best and will continue, and I think by leaps and bounds,” Trump said.
“And that’s why in a few moments I will sign an executive order to begin the process of creating a new national academy. It’s called the U.S. Space Academy. That’s a big deal. So, you think of West Point, and you think of Annapolis, and you think of the Air Force Academy, and you think of the Coast Guard Academy is great. They’re all great,” Trump said, adding that he’ll choose a location for the new institution “very shortly.”
“I said, ‘I’ll do it, but it’s got to be top line. It’s got to be the equivalent of the others, which are great,'” Trump said of his decision to approve creation of the new academy.
