Chris Rock Declares Trump Got One Crucial Thing ‘Right’ That ‘Almost Clears’ Him of All Other ‘Sins’

Comedian and filmmaker Chris Rock is no “fan” of President Donald Trump, but he does credit him with getting one major thing right.

Rock spoke with Variety this week to promote an upcoming film he wrote and directed, Misty Green, his first since 2014’s Top Five. He touched on Trump after the outlet noted he was one of the few figures on the left who predicted Trump’s 2016 presidential win.

The comedian said he’s not a “fan,” but declared Trump got one thing right by going after the media.

“I’m not a fan. But it’s weird when somebody gets one thing right, and the one thing almost clears them of all their other sins. The news is fake. He got that right,” Rock said.

He also discussed the infamous slap he received from fellow actor Will Smith in 2022 while hosting the Academy Awards. Rock said he thinks his time hosting the event is done and he’ll only come back if he’s nominated.

“I’m not getting nominated. The only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated, and I’m not getting nominated. And that’s OK. We’ll deal with that if it happens. Like, let’s manage expectations,” he said.

Rock is a longtime vocal liberal, supporting numerous Democratic politicians, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D). In a 2020 interview with The New York Times, he argued former President Barack Obama’s victory was “progress for White people.”

“I said this before, but Obama becoming the president, it’s progress for white people,” he said. “It’s not progress for Black people. It’s the Jackie Robinson thing. It’s written like he broke a barrier, as if there weren’t Black people that could play before him. And that’s how white people have learned about racism. They think, when these people work hard enough, they’ll be like Jackie.”
