Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ Fails to Get Enough Republican Votes to Get Out of Committee

President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” failed to get out of the House Budget Committee on Friday as four Republican holdouts voted it down.

Reps. Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Chip Roy (R-TX), Josh Brecheen (R-OK), Ralph Norman (R-SC), and Lloyd Smucker (R-IL) all joined the Democrats and voted no. Smucker supports the reconciliation effort to pass Trump’s sweeping fiscal agenda, but changed his vote in order to bring the measure up for a vote next week. The final vote was 16-21.

Roy has been an outspoken critic of the bill, calling it “swamp account” in a social media post on Thursday.  The bill includes extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and would enact the president’s proposed budget for the upcoming year, while also raising the debt ceiling.

“Right now, the House proposal fails to meet the moment. It does not meaningfully change spending (Medicaid expansion to able bodied, IRA subsidies),” wrote Roy, adding, “Plus many of the decent provisions and cuts, don’t begin until 2029 and beyond. That is swamp accounting to dodge real savings.”

During a CNBC hit, Roy added, “We should not be giving Medicaid to anyone who is ineligible, including those who are illegal, and we should kill all the scams the blue states are using to launder federal money to all of their ridiculous programs. Republicans should lead to support the president. They’re not right now. I can’t support the bill as it is.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has also been a vocal opponent of the bill, telling Fox News on Thursday, “The problem is, is it’s asking conservatives, like myself, to raise the debt ceiling 5 trillion dollars. That’s historic. No one’s ever raised the debt so that much. It will be a record for Congress to raise the debt 5 trillion dollars,” Paul replied, adding:

But, also it indicates that this year the deficit will be over 2 trillion, but it means they’re anticipating close to 3 trillion for the next year. It’s really a slap in the face at those of us who are excited about Elon Musk and DOGE and all the cuts. Where are the cuts? If the cuts are real, why are we going to borrow five trillion?

Trump has raged on social media against GOP critics of the legislation, writing, “We don’t need “GRANDSTANDERS” in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!”

This is a developing story and has been updated.
