Vice President JD Vance sparked a wave of criticism on Thursday night when he slammed a highly anticipated Wall Street Journal report on a letter President Donald Trump wrote to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“Forgive my language but this story is complete and utter bullshit. The WSJ should be ashamed for publishing it,” Vance wrote on X, adding:

Where is this letter? Would you be shocked to learn they never showed it to us before publishing it? Does anyone honestly believe this sounds like Donald Trump?

Vance was referring to the Journal’s Thursday bombshell that Trump wrote Epstein a “bawdy” letter that included an apparent drawing of a naked woman, which he signed, “Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.”

“This is not me. This is a fake thing. It’s a fake Wall Street Journal story,” Trump told the Journal of the report.

Vance’s attack on the report comes as no surprise as he works to defend his president and heal the fracture that the Epstein case has caused in the MAGA base, but it was quickly derided by critics who pointed to an old statement Vance made on the case.

In December of 2021, Vance posted about Epstein’s “client list” and wrote, “If you’re a journalist and you’re not asking questions about this case you should be ashamed of yourself. What purpose do you even serve? I’m sure there’s a middle class teenager somewhere who could use some harassing right now but maybe try to do your job once in a while.”

His tweet was shared in response to his attack on the Journal:
